Drum Level Measurements
Recently, one of our clients had been cited by a boiler inspector for not complying with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code PG-60.1. This section of the code requires that boiler drums operating at > 400 psi must have 2 (two) independent indications of drum level visible to the operators at all times. Most sites have a bi-color device such as an 'Eye-Hi' which provides one of the two required indications. Most sites also rely on their DCS as the second method of measurement. However, the clarification of the ASME code states that a DCS display that can be changed to another screen is NOT acceptable for this requirement.
CTD has developed a stand alone package that will display only the boiler drum levels and the screen cannot be changed. This meets the requirements of the code and provides continuous monitoring of your drum levels at all times. The screen can be customized to meet your particular installation and operator needs. Click here for a sample screen shot showing just a few of the elements we can incorporate into your system.
We provide a complete package that will provide monitoring of up to 3 drum levels for $9,800. We can also provide installation assistance if needed.
We will be happy to provide you with a quotation for your system based on your unique plant configuration. Call CTD at 877-CTD-TUNE (877-283-8863) or email us at info@controllertuning.com -
Drum Level Control
It seems there is a great deal of confusion and misinformation about this critical control issue. We have prepared a detailed paper that explains the reason the 3-Element control is so important and how it can benefit your company by increasing reliability of your units. The paper is titled Drum Level Control - Myths, Facts, and Other Minutiae. CTD can provide you with the engineering expertise that will insure your drum is operating at peak performance and remains stable. -

System Integration
If you have various PLCs around your plant that sould be providing critical information to your operators, but are not, CTD can interface those PLCs into your system and allow for greater flexibility of your plant. -
DCS Upgrade or Retro-fit
Before you send the PO to an OEM vender you may want to consider the following observations that CTD has made over many years of experience.
Many OEMs have down sized and eliminated their experienced engineers. As a result the companies are outsourcing their engineering to overseas firms that have little or no experience in process control (The DCS sales people will assure you they have great expertise, but experience does not show this to be true).
The OEM will often 'low ball' the sale of the DCS and the logic development and then rely on the after sales service calls to make up the money they would have made previously. The result for you is a much higher cost then you budgeted for.
There is an alternative! And the DCS vendors do not like to hear this!
You can purchase your DCS hardware and software only and then hire a third party to perform the logic design and implementation for you. CTD has the experience to work with you, the DCS vendor, and if it is a new unit, the A&E firm.
The result will be a control system that meets your needs and operates the way you want it to while maintaining system safety and equipment protection.
So before sending out that PO give CTD a call and see how you can reduce your cost of engineering, programming, and commissioning of your new controllers.

Attention Foxboro I/A Owners!
CTD can update and create a complete drawing package based on your existing system. As you know, logic changes made in I/A must be documented manually. If your drawings are not 100% accurate, you have the potential for tripping or damaging your unit resulting in substantial loss of revenue. -
Logic Improvements
With a wide array of logic expertise, CTD can recommend and implement specific changes that will improve your plant's performance regardless of the DCS OEM. -
Project Management
Do you have a new project that requires oversight, but not enough staff to support it? CTD can provide project management support and insure that your interests are being protected. -
Commissioning
With any new process control equipment, it is important that a proper Site Acceptance Test be performed, and that the system is commissioned for best operating ability. CTD's experienced engineering staff can help you make that happen! -
Training
Expert training in the area of process control and tuning principles is another value added service that CTD provides. This training is focused on practical aspects of the job and not just the theory. Designed for Operators, Technicians, and Engineers, these 2 to 4 day courses are available at your site. This industry specific training is available using examples from your own equipment to develop material and provide your staff with training relevant to their particular needs.
